FLASHBACKFRIDAY...

Circa 2013, during Move Jozi times we had a leaderboard that kept tracked of everybody that shared their Nike+ runs with #movejozi on twitter. I was always in the top 5 however there was this 1 runner who was always in the top three who kept showing us flames. We had never met her all we knew was that she is @tanyakovarsky

I finally have the honour of featuring her she showed us flames in 2013.

Q. Tell us a little bit about who you are and what you do for a living?
A. I’m a mom who works in PR, communications and content. I also blog at Rattle and Mum.

Q. How do you balance your exercise regime and your professional life?
A. I try to run early in the mornings, so it’s out the way for the day.

Q. When and why did you start running?
A. I started around 14 years ago. At the time I was unfit, fat and a smoker, and wanted to try feel a bit better about myself. I was the girl at school who bunked PT and who begged her mom to write sick notes to get her out of cross country and every other sport.

Q. What motivates you to go out there, when you do not feel like it?
A. I remember how lousy I feel when I don’t run, and I try to remember that while I can run, I will.

Q. What is the longest distance you have ran?
A. 89km.

Q. What gives you the confidence to run in the streets?
A. I run with friends, or with my Labrador.

Q. What was your best running experience?
A. There are so many – from running New York and Paris marathons, to finishing my first 10km, 21km, 32km and so on, to achieving PBs. I’m fortunate that I have so many “best” runinng experiences.

Q. What was your worst running experience?
A. Possibly my first Comrades. I was unprepared for how hard it was, physically, mentally and emotionally. There were more tears than usual.

Q. How do you push through the pain?
A. Firstly, I didn’t want to have to explain to people why I didn’t finish, and secondly, I didn’t want to wear any of my Comrades-branded gear without having crossed the line.

Q. What advice can you give somebody who wants to start running?
A. Don’t lose sight of the finish line, and go slowly and steadily. Try to listen to trusted experts or runners, and if a certain method or specialist isn’t working for you, find what works.

Q. Which Social media sites are you on and how can one follow you?
A. I’m on Twitter (@TanyaKovarsky), Instagram (@TanyaKovarsky), Facebook (www.facebook.com/RattleAndMum), LinkedIn (Tanya Kovarsky) and Pinterest (Tanya Kovarsky).

My best running shoes is …
...currently, New Balance Free Foam

I love running because …
... it makes me feel good, it’s social, and it’s a great equaliser

Injury is …
... something I fortunately haven’t experienced in a long time

My body is …
... chunky

My running playlist has …
... everything from Bach to Eminem to Coldplay

I hate running when …
... I’m tired and sore

Pain is …
... inevitable. And temporary

The road …
... is never easy

Sweat is …
... inevitable

In future, I would like to run …
... the Washie 100 miler

Indie means …
... independent

I do not like runners who …
... don’t aim well when spitting, and those who don’t give faster runners space to lap them (especially in double lap races). Also, I have an aversion to runners who play tambourines at races, and those who carry political banners.
