Q. Who are you and what you do for a living?
I am Tuundjakuje Martin, Tuundja for short. I am a proud Namibian, known for always smiling. I am 25 years old currently doing my post graduate LLB at University of the Witwatersrand (WITS) in Johannesburg.
Q. How do you balance your exercise regime and your professional life?
I would say running is a necessity in my life as it helps relax and free my mind from the academic pressures and stress associated with studying law. When I’m not running I love to play soccer so I try to make sure I fit in 3-4 sessions of either one or the other per week to help me balance my studies.
Q. When and why did you start running?
I started running in November 2016. I started running because my mother would often partake in the annual Two Oceans (half) marathon and she challenged me to try it. It’s worth noting that I had absolutely no passion for running. I despised it but like most running clichés I fell in love with the idea of challenging myself more and more.
Q. What motivates you to go out there, when you do not feel like it?
What get me out on days I don't feel like it, is often the desire and incentive to stay healthy and fit, both physically and mentally. I am further motivated by my very competitive personality, which is fueled by the hunger/inclination to remain above my friends on social running application leadership boards.
Q. What is the longest distance you have ran?
My longest distance currently is 21,5km. I’m hoping to tackle my first full marathon early next year (2019).
Q. What gives you the confidence to run in the streets?
Having moved to Johannesburg at the beginning of 2017 I was very concerned about safety. So running in groups was my primary focus. Fortunately, I came across the Nike Running Club where I met a friend that told me about the run_tell_that_ social running movement. It is here where I found a family that shares the same (if not greater passion) for running.
Q. What do you think about the lack of exercise?
I think a lack of exercise is self-sabotage. As mentioned earlier, running and/or exercise, keeps one healthy physically and mentally. A lack of exercise infuses a lazy state of mind which can adversely affect other aspects of your life.
Q. What was your best running experience?
My best running experience was the Two Oceans half Marathon 2018.
It was my 2nd Two Ocean half, I trained well, the weather was great, everything went smoothly and I managed to cut 18minutes off my previous time.
Q. What was your worst running experience?
Worst running experience was the MTN 10km race 2017. Temperatures at the start of the race ranged between -3 and 1 degree Celsius. It was bone-chillingly cold to the point my watch froze and refused to start up until the 5km mark. I was also surprised to learn how hilly the race was. I, ultimately, ended up walking a substantial portion of the race
Q. How do you push through the pain?
I usually run with music so a change in tracks helps divert my attention elsewhere. Also, a constant reminder that im only bettering myself helps negate the pain.
Q. What advice can you give somebody who wants to start running?
The most difficult part is starting. Its important to know that starting is not just your first run. Starting is the collection of a few first runs coupled with the will to continue to so. Once, you have this in place I promise it will only become easier, fulfilling and more rewarding.
12. Which Social media sites are you on and how can one follow you?
I can be found on Instagram @gym2ndja where I share most of my running motivation and fitness experiences.
I can also be found on @2ndja where I share more of my personal life outside running.
