Q. Who are you and what you do for a living?

I am Naiema Abrahams. I am a full time Director and part time student

Q. How do you balance your exercise regime and your professional life?

I try and have a set routine and schedule exercise like I would schedule a meeting in my diary. I do travel quite a bit which makes sticking to the routine challenging but I try my level best to keep going no matter what city I find myself in.

Q. When and why did you start running?

I started running just over 3 years ago. After the loss of both my parents and a brother, it was easy to fall into a slump and comfort eat, hide from the world. The fact that I was never athletic my entire life did not help the spiral I found myself in. Short version I needed to make a change physically, emotionally and spiritual and the outlet of choice was running.

Q. What motivates you to go out there, when you do not feel like it?

Always the fear of doing a disservice to myself, by not doing the best I can or not putting in the most effort possible.

Q. What gives you the confidence to run in the streets?

My lipstick lol

Q. What was your best running experience?

There are so many to choose from sometimes I feel just when it couldn’t get better….It does.

If I have to choose it would be every Soweto Marathon I’ve done. My first Two Oceans Ultra.

Q. What was your worst running experience?

Even when it was bad, it was good crossing that finish line and collecting a medal

Q. How do you push through the pain?

This is a very personal thing for me. I normally think of my late brother, who had passed before I started running, he believed I could do anything. I think about how he would have been at every finish line cheering like I had won the race and that thought pushes me through.

Q. What advice can you give somebody who wants to start running?

Do it to have fun and when you run your first race have the most fun. No one wants to remember their first race, half marathon, marathon or ultra-marathon as being hard. It’s only memorable when you having fun and smiling.

Also having the right shoes and the perfect red lips help lol
