#WCW/// Before instagram, Wednesdays were just Wednesdays but not anymore. To support women's running to see inspire more women out there on the streets. To empower women, any runner posted on a Wednesday will be a woman. To kick off this effort we chose this amazing woman, whose love for running is evident through her posts. Her Smile... Her Smile... One of those smiles that will make you think Running is Easy and convince you to start doing it. Here is our Woman Crush Wednesday selection...

Tell us a little bit about who you are and what you do for a living? My name is Lizette Marroquin. I am a 37 year old mother of two pre-teens. I was born and raised in Los Angeles, CA. Both my parents are Mexican. I have one older sister and a younger brother who is also a runner. I work in the production department of a Home Improvement company.

Q. How do you balance your exercise regime and your professional life?

Its’s so hard to find the balance between being a mother, a runner and a professional. I have to find more time in the day for everything. My morning’s start very early. If I can get a run in before the sun rises great. If I can get a run in after the sun sets even better. But sometimes those runs fall short of the miles I have to get in so I wait for weekends when I can wake up at 4Am and hit the pavement before anyone else is up. But my priority is being a mother first. Running or even gym, come second. Nonetheless my activities get done.

Q. When and why did you start running?

I think the minute our little feet hit the floor we start running. I’ve never seen a baby “walk”. But actually run was in college. Trying to deal with being a full time student and working was becoming stressful. One of the classes I took was a “aerobics” class. It was so not aerobics. It was very much like a cross fit/ sprint class. It was so hard but I noticed after each class I was so relaxed. And from then on I kept up with the sport.

Q. What motivates you to go out there, when you do not feel like it? I have to just not think too much about it. I just get up and go. Sometimes my legs feel too heavy but I know that it’s mental because the moment I find my stride I’m fine.

Q. What is the longest distance you have ran?

The longest I have ran is 26.2 miles. I’ve ran 4 full marathons and many halfs.

Q. What gives you the confidence to run in the streets?

I’m that middle of the street runner. I really feel invincible when I’m out there. Other people run on the curb. I can’t stay on it. I always jump off. I find the asphalt gives you more of a bounce.

Q. What do you think about the lack of exercise among the youth?

I think all kids should be out running. Keep busy every day. I’m not saying that kids under the age of 13 should be running long distance. But they should get out and get vitamin D. Parents should be more responsible about that. I checked with my paediatrician first about my kids running and he advised I wait until they are 13 for long distance. Starting them too soon can cause bone damage especially since they are growing. But a good aerobic activity would benefit everyone.

Q. What was your best running experience?

I ran Long Beach full for the second year. I was so sick start to finish but I was determined to cross that finish line. I didn’t care about my time. I accomplished it my goal. My mind wanted me to stop so many times but I knew I couldn’t. My heart was in it.

Q. What was your worst running experience?

My first 10K. It was all incline. I never thought the finish line would come. But I completed it. My knees were mad at me for a while though.

Q. How do you push through the pain?

I try to block it out of my mind. It’s hard but then I think about how proud my children will be when I am done. If I can’t handle it I stop, stretch and then keep going.

Q. What advice can you give somebody who wants to start running?

Run your pace. Do not try to keep up with everyone else. This is your run and yours alone. It’s your time. Also, run in good shoes and breathable clothing.

Q. Which Social media sites are you on and how can one follow you?

I am mostly on Instagram. I’m under @robkaity. On FB I am under Lizette Annette Marroquin

My best running shoes is…

 either Brooks or Newtons

I love running because …

It allows me to get lost even if it’s a short run. It frees me from stress.

Injuries are …

Slight stress fracture on the left tibia. Both knees have torn meniscus, no cartilage and the beginnings of arthritis. But pain is temporary. I think if you think about how much it hurts it affects your run. Just find a good pace and your mind will quiet down.

My body is …

miraculous. Two kids and running are proof of that.

My running playlist is …

non-existent. I don’t run with music. I am a music lover but not for running.

I hate running when …

I see that everyone else is faster than I am. I get over it right away though.

Pain is …

Mental

The road …

is my playground. Wide open for everyone.

Sweat is …

bad ass. If you’re covered in sweat after a run or work out then you are really doing work.

In future, I would like to run …

International races.

Indie means …

not major but awesome in its own right. Like a indie movie can be cool but not mainstream.

I do not like runners who …

do not follow runners etiquette. Or runners that think they are “too cool” because they’re faster than others. Running is something that is for every single person. Slow, fast. Doesn’t matter. We each run our own race on our own time. We will each get out of comfort zone at one point or another.

#RunRevolution

BLOODY MONDAY < I think I have conditioned my body to hate monday run days. I have this thing where I chant bloody monday while I am running. I imagine blood and sweat and death on the streets but I push through this because this is the first run of the week. Today I pushed from 3 kilometres to 5 kilometres because I was out there and 3 kilometres just did not make sense. With that said, Read this story, follow the runner on @giseladj have a good week and join us on the streets. #bloodymonday

A year and a half ago I could'nt imagine myself as a runner. Neither was my husband. He heard about Trail running, and entered a race and started training. I accompanied him to that race - The Buffelspoort Trail run in January last year. As soon as I arrived I knew I wanted to be a part of this.

So I decided to become a trail runner - I had no intention of running on the road - I could think of nothing more miserable than road running.

My husband and I started looking around for places to go trail running on weekends. We have two small kids, so getting somebody to babysit while we go running was sometimes a challenge. For a few months we were trail running and entering races when ever we could get the chance. Then as we were running one winter morning at B'sorah - our favourite trail running venue, it struck me - ITBS.

I would get ITB pain every time during a run for the next 3 months. I was crushed - I really enjoyed running and didn't want to give it up. I kept on running, hoping the pain will go away.  We heard about foam rollers and decided to get one. I rolled my ITB every time before and after a run, and eventually the pain went away completely. The foam roller is really the best thing since sliced toast.

I could finally run again pain free and entered that same Buffelspoort Trail run that got me hooked and finished top 20 under the ladies.

I would describe myself as a "social runner", because I love to take pictures as I run and posting them afterwards to social media. I run with my Iphone in-hand. Due to my "social sharing", New Balance seleted me for their #seemyrun campaign. They were kind enough to send me a new pair of New Balance Fresh Foams straight out of America with a New Balance hoodie.

New Balance instructed the participants to try these Fresh Foams out, take pics and Hyperlapse videos and post them to Instagram. I was lucky to be featured on their website with one of my videos. I have run a few street races, but I still prefer trail running. Trail Runners seem to care more about the environment and that means a lot to me.

Future plans? I hope to one day complete a triathlon, that looks like fun!

NOBODY!!!!! EVER LOOKED THIS GOOD WHILE PLANKING...

Q. Tell us a little bit about who you are and what you do for a living?

According to my blog www.chasingclarity.com "I'm just an average twenty-something girl that has an affinity for running, cupcakes, taking home beer glasses from bars, reading comics, and hogging the blankets in bed." Here’s a bit more about me: my name is Sara Bettencourt and I'm 25 years old. I live in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada where I work as a freelance American Sign Language Interpreter. When I'm not at work, running in a race, or working out I like to keep things low key; read, or lounge around at home and either watch some t.v. or a movie, or spend time with family and friends. I enjoy travelling so I do less while I'm at home so I can go away on a semi-regular basis, which is usually for a run.

Balancing my professional life and my exercise regime is something that can be challenging at times, maybe even stressful. As someone who works freelance I am fortunate enough to make my own hours, however those hours change on a daily basis depending on what type of work I accept and where I am for the day; I'm not one of those people that can go for a run or go to the gym every morning at the same time as a part of my daily routine, because one day I might start at 8am down the street from my house and the next day I start at 8am, but I'm leaving my house at 6:30am to get there on time due to the commute. I just make sure I have enough time at some point during my day, which just means some days I'm exercising at the crack of dawn, when other days I'm exercising during my lunch time, or I'm exercising while most people are in bed sleeping at night.

Knowing that some of my weekdays get busy with work I usually don't schedule things with friends and try to save that for the weekend; weekends are easier to manage for me since I usually don’t work and it's just a matter of getting into the gym when I get out of bed. When I have a free day during the week or on a Saturday or Sunday I'll try and get in a longer workout or workout twice that day, that way if I do have to miss a day later in the week I don't feel as guilty.

The first time I actually went out for a run was in May of 2013 and it was because I wanted to make sure I didn't die when did the Color Me Rad 5k run on June 22 with a few of my colleagues that had invited me out.

The reason why I started running was sparked from this outing with my colleagues; what started as a fun weekend away has easily become a huge part of my life and who I am. I realized that running provides me with so much clarity. As someone who was diagnosed with depression and on medication for quite some time, running is what allowed me to be free of that. I'm no longer the girl that has depression and has to take meds to try and be happy, I'm now the girl who feels free and without burden and the girl that runs for clarity, happiness, and health.

There are so many motivators for me, which I think is important for everyone to have. For starters I look at how far I've come mentally, physically, and emotionally and the person that I’ve become since I started running; I never thought any of this was possible and if you had asked me before I started running if I would ever run a 5k, let alone a few half marathons, I would've laughed in your face. That feeling of accomplishment and everything I’ve overcome and the determination I have to do better is what pushes me.

In addition to that, the amazing people I've been able to interact with on social media (Twitter, Instagram, etc.) and through my blog are inspiring on a daily basis. Being able to see what they’re up to everyday pushes me to make the time to get out there. Lastly, since setting up my blog (www.chasingclarity.com) while developing a love for running, and discussing my journey, I’ve had people tell me that I’m inspiring them and I want to get out there so that they get out there.

The longest distance I’ve ran to date is 25k at Run for the Toad, which was a trail run in October of 2013. Hoping to complete my first full marathon this year and change that.

What gives me confidence to run in the streets is I know I belong there. Regardless of how fast you are, a mile is a mile and a kilometre is a kilometre. If you run, you’re a runner; the streets are yours.

Q. What was your best running experience?
My best running experience to date has to be The Canada Army Run 5k. I didn’t get a PR and beat my best time, but I got to run with my older sister in her first 5k. Running is my newest love in life and it was so great so share it with her.

DOM! DOm! Dom! I chose this guy because...

He is constantly telling me to go out there and run consistently. I have not been running consistently. I have been running once or twice a week, 9 - to - 5 happened and now I have a pot belly.

Also he has been trying to get me to do races, I can not wait to meet him at the races.

On who you are…

My name is Dominic Lebohang Storom. I like to believe that I am a young, vibrant and highly energetic 27 year old from Mamelodi, Pretoria. I am a Chartered Accountant by profession and a street runner by hobby! I guess you can say that I am an ordinary 20-something… I enjoy going to the movies, going out for some drinks with, mates and discovering all the wonderful things that an active life allows one to do with all the boundless energy one receives…

On running…

Running changed my life!

I decided to seriously pursue running as a means to shed excess body weight after taking a holiday to Mozambique with a friend. There I was, in the most beautiful of places and I could not get myself to take my shirt off because of how out of shape and overweight I was. I got home on the 3rd of January 2014 and decided to dust off a pair of shoes and start running.

The first run was HORRIBLE! Could barely breathe. Felt as if my lungs were about to come out of my throat. Second run was just as horrible (if not more) as I was stiff from the first run…but I knew something had to give eventually. So I stuck with it. The burning sensation started to subside, the time taken to run a kilometre started to come down and the numbers on the scale also started to come down.

I now try to get in a run at least 4 times a week. I run anything between 5 and 15kms per run including an official race every weekend (depending on my work schedule). I have found that the running provides a great source of “feel good” emotions once the run is done, an even better sense of accomplishment and provides an awesome outlet for stress that has built up over the weekend or the day.

I am now in the process of trying to qualify for the Two Oceans Ultra Marathon and plan on running a marathon in Europe later on in the year. Figured I may as well combine my passion for travel with my new found passion for running? Good move I think!

AND most importantly…I really enjoy it! Nothing quite like spending time with yourself, the open road and your own thoughts!

On Street culture...

I am not one who normally keeps up with street culture in terms of what’s happening and what is not. My motto is “Defy all culture…create your own”!

I think I am lucky to be living in a city like Pretoria where many people have developed some sort of running culture over the years. I hear the running talk quite often in the gym locker rooms (guys encourage each other to run). I am however not keen on running in any type of established manner as I think it will take away from the freedom I have found in running. I never want my running to become a scheduled event that I absolutely have to do. Thus my own running culture is to keep it light…enjoyable and flexible.

On gadgets...

I absolutely love I absolutely love everything gadget and technological. Even in my everyday life. I have an app for almost absolutely everything. This passion for technology crept into the running as well. I initially used the MapMyRide app to log my runs…to see the speed I was running at etc (you are your own biggest competitor right?). However, I got introduced to the Nike+ running app and my life has never been the same. I have also since purchased the Nike+ running sports watch (heaven!!!) and a pair of Nike+ running shoes (which help track some running stats even when you are on a treadmill).

On injury...

I have been incredibly lucky that I am not necessarily prone to injuries from running. I do however think that it is because I really try listen to my body…when it needs a rest, I give it a rest. The longest time that I have been out of action is two weeks. I had a stiff achilles tendon. Gave that baby some rest for two weeks and it felt as good as new when I started running!

On achievements...

I am driven by the desire to conquer and achieve something/anything new…I constantly challenge myself to do things that make me scared. I recently completed the Soweto Marathon (half marathon) and a few other half marathons.

I had a FANTSATIC running month in December. I ran over 180kms in the month (tracked on the Nike+ running app). Previous best was 113KM (SMASHED!).

I also (which I am very proud of) completed the 67KM ride for Mandela towards the end of the year 2014!

I am hoping that I will be able to add a full marathon and an ultra-marathon to my list of achievements within the first four months of the year. However, there are two achievements stick out for me thus far!

On your social media...

I think my friends are bored beyond words regarding all the posts I put up on all my social spaces. My posts normally have to do with the fact that I have completed a run, contemplating one or currently doing one! I have gotten a lot of backlash for it…however I have also converted a soul or two into become runners themselves and that for me is pretty special!

So all my social spaces are dedicated running and keeping healthy. This wellness and fitness thing has completely overtaken my life. Love it!

On Pink...

The colour? The musician? Hahaha!

I actually would be keen on running in pink colours! Think that would be incredibly cool! I am actually running in a cancer themed race come end of January 2015 where the running attire is purple speedos… pink and purple are close enough right?

On Pain...

Some pain is bearable…push through it!

Some pain is however not…listen to your body and seek help from a professional.

A good runner knows the difference!

When I die...

*long awkward pause before an incredibly assured answer*

I would like to be remembered as someone who lived for something he was passionate about. As someone who lived with intention and who took care of his body, mind and soul. I would like to be remembered as someone who laughed loudly from his inner being. As someone who lived without regret.

I will also bequeath my Nike+ running watch and shoes to my best friend (younger brother) so that he too can come to discover the freedom I chased and found on the open road.

#RunRevolution

It has been our goal to feature runners from different countries and this goal is slowly being achieved we roam north into Africa tonight. This is our Man Crush Monday, Run like a Kenyan...

My heroes are Moses Tanui and Wilson Kipsang.

It is a stereotype; not all Kenyans are elite athletes. I have been lucky enough to interact with champions; athletes and the support staff ( physios / coaches). Listening to the sacrifice and hard work they put in to get to the top is really inspiring. Running is an individual activity and it is you who decides where you want to be. I am extremely proud to be part of the two running clubs #OkoaJahazi and #ZoonaRunners, that is my family.

On gadgets…

Unfortunately my music is my crutch. Gadgets on the run – iPhone + Jabra clipper sport. These two I can’t run without. My playlist is full of motivational songs that help me not give up when my heart tries to lie to my legs.

On injury…

I am lucky enough to have the best physio in the world. I mean this is not exaggerated; many world & Olympic champions are treated by him. I have remained injury free solely because of Kariakim. Number 1 tip to avoid injury – always stretch after any run

On achievements…

The list is endless. Commitment, a couple of half marathons in multiple cities across the continent, financial inclusion strategies, started a running club and inspired a few people across to start the journey

On future goals…
