Q. Who are you and what you do for a living?

I am Mpho Manthe, from Jan kempdorp in the Northern Cape but now am based in Pretoria. I work in the Automotive Industry

Q. How do you balance your exercise regime and your professional life?

I usually exercise in the evenings midweek and run on weekends as well as that is the only time that I get to run.

Q. When and why did you start running?

I started running as a way of regaining fitness from a soccer injury and the running bug bit me then. Running helps clear the mind off a lot of clutter. The health benefits of running are also endless

Q. What motivates you to go out there, when you do not feel like it?

Running is very therapeutic, I know that once I get out there I am going to come back feeling much better

Q. What gives you the confidence to run in the streets?

I always my willingness and need to be a better runner that help boosts the confidence to go out and try some more. Running is part of my lifestyle now, most of my friends have taken it up and we are doing it socially as a group

Q. What was your best running experience?

Finishing my first 42.4 km race takes the cup for me. I was supposed to have ran it earlier in 2019 and I ended up doing it at the Soweto Marathon 2019. Funny thing is we left it too late in terms of the preparations. Literally went in with just one month’s preparations and luckily it worked out very well for me. It also broke a lot of mental barriers for me

Q. What was your worst running experience?

Soweto Marathon 2017, I ran it with my wife from the beginning to the end and let’s just say it did not turn out well lol (Self-inflicted things though)

Q. How do you push through the pain?

I always think of the end results, it motivates me to push to it to the end. I think that we as the runners are addicted to it lol (the pain that is)

Q. What advice can you give somebody who wants to start running?

Starting to run is probably the best thing anyone can ever do for themselves, the benefits of running are endless. Start at your own pace and improve gradually, set targets and smash them
